Chapter Nine

“Dude, that was a low blow. Nothing below the waist.” Zander spoke loudly to Cole so Ricky could hear outside the ring. Cole and Zander boxed together fairly often, and Zander was glad Cole was there now for Ricky to catch a glimpse of what being inside the ring actually looked like.

“Dude, I know. I wasn’t trying,” Cole said as he threw another punch that Zander rolled away from. Ricky had managed to make the gym a few times so Zander could get a feel for what Ricky knew. Which, sadly, was nothing. Zander was still trying to talk him out of trying to attend the fight. Ricky had brought Zander the invitation to the fight, and Zander had made a few calls and heard of some young guys who were already signed up and were expected to win.

Zander hadn’t been in that world much lately, and even though he didn’t mind sparring with Cole and another guy at the gym, he didn’t want to go back into boxing. It was its own world, and he’d retired. He’d come, conquered, and left. He still had some of his trophies stuck in a box in his garage somewhere.

He shuffled around as Cole threw a few punches at him. It wasn’t at their usual pace but slow enough to show Ricky what was what before Zander was crazy enough to let him into the ring. Ricky had a long way to go.

“Time’s up. I have dinner tonight with Jillian’s parents.” Cole stopped and pulled off his gloves.

“That’s it? Man, this shit looks easy.” Ricky flipped his hat backward and began throwing air punches.

Zander clenched his jaw at Ricky’s know-it-all punk attitude. Maybe if Zander invited Ricky into the ring, he could knock some sense into him, and that would change Ricky’s mind about trying to jump into something he didn’t have adequate training for.

If that didn’t work, Zander was going to quit. There was no way he could get Ricky into shape by April to fight. Not with the dudes he’d heard about. It wouldn’t be right.

“Later, man. Tell Jillian I said hello. You. Pick up his gloves. Pull your pants up. Tighten them with your belt and get your ass in here. Take off your hat too.”

Zander waited while Ricky did what Zander asked, and then when Ricky stepped into the ring, Zander let the young kid have it. Not Zander’s best but enough to teach him a lesson.

“Never look away,” Zander told him. “Put your fists up, like this. Keep ’em up. Use them to block. Like this. No. Not down here.” Zander pushed Ricky’s elbows until his fists were where they should be. “Right there. Keep them there.”

To Ricky’s credit, he followed Zander’s lead and did everything Zander instructed him to do. Zander used the opportunity to punch him a few times—only once in the face, and it wasn’t hard.

“Okay, man. That’s enough. Enough. I’m done.” Ricky gasped and fell to the mat. “I can’t do it anymore.”

Zander sat on the mat next to Ricky, and they both pulled off their gloves.
